Donna Summer’s Estate Sues Kanye West Over Copyright Infringement
Kanye West is facing a lawsuit from Donna Summer’s estate for allegedly using an uncleared sample of her music on his new album. The estate claims that West’s request to sample Summer’s 1977 hit “I Feel Love” was denied, yet he proceeded to use a soundalike of the song on his track “Good (Don’t Die).” Despite the song being removed from streaming services, the estate is seeking damages and an injunction to block further distribution. This legal action adds to the controversy surrounding West, whose comments have been criticized as far-right or antisemitic.
The lawsuit highlights an ongoing trend where artists, including Ozzy Osbourne, have denied sample requests from Kanye West due to various concerns. Osbourne, for example, refused permission to sample a live version of Black Sabbath’s “Iron Man,” citing his belief that West is “an anti-Semite.” Kanye’s behavior and controversial statements have led to brands and business partners disassociating from him, impacting his music releases and collaborations.
