Renowned Ghanaian musician Bisa Kdei has called for the introduction of more Highlife music categories in award schemes to encourage younger artists to embrace the genre.

Bisa Kdei, a multiple award-winning Highlife artist, made this appeal during an appearance on the Onua Showtime Entertainment program, hosted by Nana Ama McBrown. He emphasized the importance of preserving Highlife music as a cultural treasure unique to Ghana, urging the nation to take pride in its musical heritage.

“Many young artists are often hesitant to identify themselves as Highlife musicians because they think it’s a genre for the older generation,” Bisa Kdei explained. “We need to create more Highlife categories in our music award schemes to motivate the younger generations to explore and develop this genre.”

Bisa Kdei, who has dedicated his career to promoting Highlife music, expressed his commitment to ensuring that the genre remains relevant and cherished. “Highlife music has opened many doors for me as a musician,” he shared. “We can’t let others come and take it from us. I am determined to fight for Highlife because it represents who we are as a people.”

The artist also highlighted the need for modernization within the Ghana Music Rights Organisation (GHAMRO). He advocated for the digitization of their systems to help artists efficiently track their earnings, thus promoting transparency and fair compensation in the music industry.

During the interview, Bisa Kdei discussed his latest single, “Boso,” which aims to rekindle the love of Highlife among fans. He believes that Highlife music is an integral part of Ghana’s cultural identity and hopes that his new song will inspire a renewed appreciation for the genre. The track has been gaining traction on social media, with the official music video set for release in the coming weeks.
