The story of Ranking Family is deeply rooted in the evolution of Ghana’s music landscape, especially the Dancehall and Reggae scenes. It all began in 1999, when the legendary Sugar Ranking introduced the late Terry Bone Chaka to his idol, the iconic Ronny Coaches of Buk Bak fame.
Impressed by the raw talent and dedication of the two young artists, Ronny Coaches was moved to give them a name that would forever signify unity and musical excellence: Ranking Family. The name was more than just a title — it represented a brotherhood and a vision for a new era in Ghanaian music.
From this moment, the original group branched out of the famed Ranking Crew, birthing a new generation of artists and influencers who were determined to cement Dancehall culture within the Ghanaian community. Their mission was simple but powerful: to elevate local talent and spread the genre beyond borders, shaping what we know and love today in Ghana’s urban music scene.
Over time, the Ranking Family grew stronger as more members joined the fraternity, all bound by a shared passion for music and a commitment to artistic growth. Through mentorship, collaborations, and grassroots movements, the family nurtured countless rising stars — with notable names such as Patoranking and Rudebwoy Ranking springing from the fold.
Fast forward to 2022, a major milestone was achieved. Sugar Ranking officially registered Ranking Family Records — transforming the fraternity into a fully-fledged record label. The goal was to offer even more opportunities for young, undiscovered talents, providing them with the tools, support, and global platforms they need to succeed in the competitive world of music.
Today, Ranking Family stands as both a cultural movement and a business enterprise dedicated to empowerment, creativity, and the global export of Ghanaian talent.
