We Built Our Community In 1999
The story of Ranking Family is deeply woven into the fabric of Ghana’s modern music culture, especially in the realms of Dancehall and Reggae. Our journey began in 1999, when the legendary Sugar Ranking introduced the late Terry Bone Chaka to his idol, Ronny Coaches of the iconic Buk Bak fame.
So impressed was Ronny Coaches by the passion and talent of the duo that he affectionately named them Ranking Family — a name that would go on to define a movement, a brotherhood, and a cultural revolution in Ghanaian music. What began as a friendship blossomed into a family of artists, producers, and creatives driven by one shared vision: to uplift Ghanaian Dancehall and urban music and bring it to the world.
From its origins out of the famed Ranking Crew, the group has continually expanded, welcoming new members and nurturing talent through mentorship, collaboration, and creative freedom. Over the years, this fraternity has played an essential role in shaping some of Ghana’s most recognizable names, including the likes of Patoranking, Rudebwoy Ranking, and many others.
In 2022, Sugar Ranking took the next bold step by officially registering Ranking Family Records as a fully-fledged record label. This milestone further solidified the family’s commitment to discovering, nurturing, and empowering emerging talents across the music and entertainment industries.
Today, Ranking Family stands as Ghana’s oldest and most influential music group, with a membership of over 20 active creatives. Our impact stretches beyond just music; we are deeply involved in grooming young talents in sound engineering, audio-visual production, media arts, and every aspect of the modern music business.
One of our proudest legacies is Jungle Yaad Studios — a landmark studio that, for over two decades, has been recording artists free of charge, a rare and powerful show of commitment to nurturing the next generation.
Beyond production, Ranking Family has grown to include artist management, music distribution, and media consultancy, making us a complete ecosystem for any artist aiming to succeed in today’s global music landscape.
